Can't run Windows Update

T

Tim Zych

When I go to the Windows update site, I am prompted to download the latest
software, which is used to figure out what updates to pick from and install.

Here is a screenshot:

So I click the install now button, and it proceeds successfully to download
and install.

However, once that has been installed, there is an error which says that
there is an error with the website being displayed.

Does anybody know what could be wrong. Is the Windows Update center down?

I have performed Windows Updates many times. This is the first time I have
seen this error.

Thanks for any help.

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3) and IE version.

1. Is Automatic Updates enabled?

2. Start | Run | (type) services.msc | OK

Is Automatic Updates and Cryptographic Services Started & set to Automatic?
If not, can you make it so, reboot, and find it the way you left it?

Is Background Intelligent Transfer Service Started & set to Manual? If not,
can you make it so, reboot, and find it the way you left it?

3. What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

4. Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Windows XP Version 5.1, SP2

IE 8.0.6001.18702

1. Is Automatic Updates enabled?

No.I usually get updates manually and select which ones I want.

2. Start | Run | (type) services.msc | OK

Is Automatic Updates and Cryptographic Services Started & set to
Automatic?
If not, can you make it so, reboot, and find it the way you left it?

Yes, both are Started/Automatic
Is Background Intelligent Transfer Service Started & set to Manual? If
not,
can you make it so, reboot, and find it the way you left it?

Yes. Started/Manual
3. What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than
Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Norton Anti Virus and Zone Alarm. NAV is current, but Zone Alarm is
not, but I don't use the anti-virus component of ZA anyway.
4. Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Just the full version of NAV

Please try to avoid inline replies. Thanks.

In order, and assuming your NAV subscription is current:

1. Enable Automatic Updates but select the Notify Only option. With Notify
Only enabled, you must (a) approve which updates are downloaded, (b) which
updates (if any) are installed via AU, and (c) when they're installed. If
you wish to continue updating manually, you may do so but at least you'll be
aware of available updates in a timely manner. See
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525

2. See if disabling ZA (Free, I assume; see #3) and then enabling the
Windows Firewall makes any difference in the behavior you're seeing.

3. If you're running ZAISS with only the firewall enabled, uninstall it then
either enable the Windows Firewall or install a third-party firewall (e.g.,
ZA Free; Online Armor).

NB: Only one (1) firewall should be enabled at any given time & you should
not be connected to the internet or any networks without a firewall enabled.

4. If an earlier Norton application had *ever* been installed (e.g., you
upgraded to your current version), you may need to (a) uninstall your
current version, (b) download/run the Norton Removal Tool
(http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039),
(c) reboot, and then (d) reinstall NAV.

Yes, Nanny.

Now, can you help with Shenan's replies where she copies and pastes
from several posts to recreate a discussion????

Top-posting is the custom in MS newsgroups, especially since MS OE,
MSWinMail, and MS WLMail top-post by default.

Please don't top-post, Nanny.

Please try to avoid inline replies. Thanks.

My reply was a hybrid of a top post with the snipped questions and answers
following (simulated "inline").

How else should I have replied to satisfy answering your questions, as
asked, one-by-one?

In all seriousness, if there is a better way to reply I'm all eyes.

You could just answer my questions by number, Tim, but please quote my
entire post in your replies.

You might want to look at the latest edition of windowssecrets.com. There is
an interesting article on Microsoft's current problem with Windows Updates.

/Server demand/ is the problem (most likely due to Vista SP2 having been
released to Windows Update last week), not Windows Update itself.

All these programs post without human interaction?

| Top posting, because that's where the cursor happens to be,

'nough said!

PS: xposts without f'up to the one group where they belong are bad!
