Have a desktop that has worked well for a year. Running
XP Pro with latest updates. Now, for no apparent reason,
can't get IP from the router. Gets a 169.254.xxx.xxx.
I've tried two different (physical and manufacturer) NICs
and two different routers (ibid) and changed the cable.
Also have reset the tcp/ip stack. My 2 laptops, when
plugged into either router, work correctly. Get IP and
get out.
From the desktop, I can ping 127.0.0.1 and, when I
manually enter an IP in the router's range, I can ping
myself and the gateway. I can also ping my laptop which
is getting the IP from the router. I can not, even with
the manual configuration, get to dns. In 'get IP
automatically' mode, IPCONFIG /renew tells me that it
can't renew the IP address.
This machine is really close to the 10th floor window and
I'm getting very tempted....
Anyone suggest a solution? What stupid thing am I
overlooking? Thanks.
