Can't remove startup programs

I have a problem with Win XP keeping my personal settings, I have never had
this problem before. I'm trying to stop programs from coming on at startup
that I dont use at that time.
I know about using startup folder, msconfig, regedit, believe me, I have
tried it all, they always go back to starting up, I have run ad-aware and
Norton, several times, it's not a virus or spyware.
Its driving me crazy, I've been doing alot of research and can't find an
answer.
If anyone has any ideas, i sure would appreciate hearing them.

This would be easier had you named the programs.
Some apps, like Real Player, need to be configured through
the program interface. Open the program, look for
configuration options, disable any "load at Startup" options.

Programs such as Itune helper, aol messenger, msn messenger, wild tangent,
and like I explained I have tried to change it within the program, it doesn't
work.
