Can't print

S

Stan Hilliard

I am helping a neighbor with a problem using XP home on an HP Pavilion
MX70, 502N. Here are the symptoms:

Print jobs won't print, they just stay up in the print queue. After
canceling the jobs, I tried to print a test page from the
printer-properties and now it is stuck there in the queue and won't
cancel.

I tried to uninstall/reinstall the HP PSC 1315 printer. Using
add/remove programs, [change/remove] produces an hourglass for a short
time but then ends without removing. Also the printer is still shown
in the printers folder.

PC runs extremely slow. I have shut down Norton and Spysweeper to no
avail. The Windows task bar contains an XP "downloading updates"
shield-shaped icon seems to be stuck at 9%, according to the tooltip.
Neither right or left click does anything to the shield.

I will appreciate suggestions,

could be a bad cable or bad
connectors.

could be an issue with the usb
port. maybe the printer needs
a 2.0 usb but is being plugged
into a 1.0 port.

could be you need to delete
the print driver and reinstall it.

could be that instead of using
the driver only for the printer
instead of the entire hp software
package, the computer is bogged
down.

Is your neighbor's PC on network connection? Mine is on network connection
whose internet service is slow for some time.

What is the shield shaped icon in the Windows task bar whose tool tip
says it is "downloading updates" and "9% complete" ? Does it indicate
something that I need to fix?

My neighbor has a high speed Comcast cable connection. I think the
problem is local to the PC.

HPs printer uninstall procedure says to disconnect the printer first.
That is what I did.

The printer has worked prior to a few days ago. The only recent change
that I know of is that an ink cartridge was changed.
could be you need to delete
the print driver and reinstall it.

In the printers folder, when I right-click on the printer bot, one
option is to delete. Question: - is that deleting the same as removing
the printer from [Control Panel] [add/remove programs] ? Or would
that leave the registry uncorrected?

I am considering removing the complete HP software package and
reinstalling it.

I replaced the USB cable to the printer and everything seemed to work
fine. That was then. But now (a month later) she says that it prints
but it lake 10 minutes to start printing.

What should I check out to try to identify the cause of this problem?

Advice will be appreciated.
