Can't print anything

Hi, I'm running Windows XP home, and had a damaged main hard drive a couple
of weeks ago which caused me to reinstall Windows on the other hard drive.
Everything else is up and running now but I can't get my printer to print
any more. I can install it with no problem, but it won't print. It will
print a test page, only if I do it from the printer. It doesn't seem to be
connecting with the PC at all, and I get no kind of error message. Of
course, I've checked the connection. I'm sure it's missing something that it
had when it was set up under the former C drive, but can't find out what.
It's an HP laserjet 5L printer, and HP doesn't have anything for me as the
printer is no longer supported. It was working fine before the crash and I'm
going to have to hate to buy a whole new printer because of what seems for
sure to be a software issue.

Been there, done that. Basically it says I can install the HP5 using windows
xp "add printer", and gives instructions on how to do that. Problem is the
instructions install the printer fine, but then when it asks me if I want to
print a test page the test fails, with no error message, and I don't know
why.
I can print a test page from the printer, but not from the computer. The
computer doesn't even detect the printer, which it should.

This "may" be one of those odd ones. For instance we have an HP4 Plus,
BUT if we use the "HP4 Plus" printdriver, it doesn't work in XP (like
yours)! We select the HP4 MP, and it works! So you may want to try some
of the other 5 print drivers. IF you find one that works, document it
for future installs.

Hi,

I just did a similar reinstall, and it seems to have worked fine. One
possible difference, however, is that I'm using a USB Parallel Printer
Adapter (Belkin F5U002), which connects the printer to a USB hub.
Maybe that would be a possible solution? Hope this helps.
