can't ping

W

Warren

Problems problems problems. Trying to set up a small or
home network.....I can't. I have posted before tryong to
sort that out but the help offered didn't solve my
problem. I ran a diagnostic and found that BOTH my PC's
won't ping itself. I CAN ping my router on both my PC's
though. Any thoughts anyone?

Warren,

Define the problem with a bit more detail. From each computer, test
connectivity and name resolution:
1) Ping itself by name.
2) Ping itself by ip address.
3) Ping the other by name.
4) Ping the other by ip address.
5) Ping 127.0.0.1.
6) Ping the router.
Report success / exact error displayed in each test (12 tests total).

Provide ipconfig for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
Identify operating system (by name and version) with each ipconfig listing.

Cheers,
Chuck

Warren,

That's not very much to start with. But it is nevertheless a good start.

You are running IPV6. Are you accessing any websites in IPV6 web space, or was
this unintentional?

It's easy enough to un install IPV6, and not too hard to re install it later.
So please start by un installing it. Then try to ping each computer from the
other.

Cheers,
Chuck

Hi Chuck,

I have posted a reply regarding the 12 tests in the
previous thread.
That being said and in response to running IPV6.
I have NO clue how to uninstall this and yes, it was
unintentional

Hi Warren,

OK, I see the ping results.

Let's try un installing IPV6. In Local Area Connection Properties, under "This
connection uses the following items:", what items are listed? Look on both Leah
and Warren please.

Cheers,
Chuck

Ok.

IPv6 only appeared on my XP Home machine. I have
uninstalled it, rebooted and pinged each machine from
both PC. Both reponses timed out - 100% loss.

Warren,

OK, don't despair. We've just started.

If you wish, you may like to read a few websites with useful tutorials:
http://www.cablesense.com/
http://www.homenethelp.com/
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/
http://www.wown.com/

I'll try to point you in the right direction, if you can provide ipconfig
information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
Identify operating system (by name and version) with each ipconfig listing.

And it wouldn't hurt if you would re run ping tests 1 - 4 on each computer.
That will tell us what progress we've made by un installing IPV6.

Cheers,
Chuck

Ok - I'm not in despair quite yet although there seems
(to me anyway) no change on these results which are below:

OK, no name resolution either way. Leah and Warren are XP SP2 or pre-SP2?.

Are you running both Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Printer Sharing
for Microsoft Networks (Local Area Connection - Properties), on each computer?
Do you have shares setup on each?

Are you running NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (Local Area Connection - Properties - TCP/IP
- Properties - Advanced - WINS) on each computer?

Make sure the browser service is running on each computer. Control Panel -
Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser, and the
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, services both show with Status = Started.

Do any of the computers have a software firewall (ICF / WF, or third party)? If
so, you need to configure them for file sharing, by opening ports TCP 139, 445
and UDP 137, 138, 445, by enabling the File and Printer Sharing exception, and /
or by identifying the other computers as present in the Local (Trusted) zone.
Firewall configurations are a very common cause of (network) browser, and file
sharing, problems.

Chuck,

From what I can gather, I have Windows Firewall. I am
also running Norton Internet Security 2004 which has a
peronal firewall. I have since added, on Norton Internet
Security, 4x IP addresses as trusted (192.168.1.1 to 4)
on both PC's.
