Can't open Word files

I bought MS Office Home and Student the other day, and installed Word and
Excel. Unfortunately, I can't open any files with either program - either it
simply doesn't work at all, or I get the message that the file doesn't exist
(I'm double-clicking on the file itself, not using a shortcut). Also, I can't
even open Word or Excel - they just don't work. I've reinstalled several
times and made sure all previous versions were wiped off my system, but I
have no idea what to do. Any ideas?

Hi Kerrick,

How did you remove the prior versions?
Have you restarted the PC after the last install?
What happens when you try to start Word while holding the ctrl key?

How did you remove the prior versions?
Umm... I just deleted them. I upgraded my system to a dual core, which means
I had to reinstall everything; I couldn't uninstall them properly due to some
missing .dll (I had this problem with all my programs/games, so I had to
manually delete them. I just realized that I never cleared the registry -
could this be the problem?
Have you restarted the PC after the last install?
Yes, a couple times.
What happens when you try to start Word while holding the ctrl key?
Nothing. I get the hourglass for a second or two, but nothing happens.
