Can't open/save attachments in windows mail. Or open or run downlo

I have the same problem the others have described. It ssem tto have just
started after most recent Windows updates. From reading the message string
it sounds like updates may be the problem. I don't have clue how to remove
the guilty update(s), let alone find which one(s) are the problem. Is
Microsoft part of this discussion? If not, how do we get them to respond in a
qiuck and effective way. Not being able to open or save email attachments is
UNACCEPTABLE!

The Windows Update really isn't the problem, although sometimes it
seems to wake up a slumbering incompatibility in one of your third party
security programs. Which antivirus are you running?

What you are seeing is a typical result of running a non-compatible
antivirus. Over time, Windows Mail gets corrupted by the antivirus.
Which antivirus program are you running?

Thank you for the reply. I am using AVG 8.

If I uninstall AVG do you think it may solve the problem?

Thanks.
If you used a standard install for AVG, uninstalling it, then doing a
custom install where you tell it to leave out the parts that scan email
often helps your Windows Mail problems.

While it's uninstalled, you might want to check if this also helps
your other problems.

I'm using AVG Free 8.0.

Can you do what? If there are any previous messages in this thread, many of
the more frequent responders in this newsgroup use methods of reaching the
newsgroups that have some advantages, but make it hard to find previous
messages in the thread if you don't quote them.

Chances are, you installed AVG using the default install option.
If so, uninstall it, then reinstall, but select custom install,
which then allows you to unselect its troublesome email
scanning module.

Note: For continuity when replying, please quote the message
you are replying to.

I also have just encountered problems after a recent "update".........
I have Vista
I have AVG Free 8 (custom to stop email scans)
I have tried it with AVG disabled.
I have tried disabling defender, and that did nothing
I have set the correct options in tools to allow attachments.

Since this update on the weekend, it stopped my "Incredimail " email program
working, as it now wont recognise "Flash", I have been forced to use Windows
Mail & I can not open ANY attachements at all, it shuts down the program
every time!

Do you have any other third party security programs like a firewall?
The Zone Alarm firewall was known to be negatively affected by the
recent Windows Update. If that's not it, uninstall AVG as a test.

Windows Defender and Windows Firewall are pretty much guaranteed
to be 100% compatible. ;-)

Thanks Gary, but no I dont have a Firewall, and I did uninstall AVG to try
it, & then re installed it via "Custom" to take out the email
scanner..........Still no use!

I have managed to fix my incredimail /Flash Player issue, so that appears to
be a seperate issue entirely.........I thought the 2 problems might have been
related somehow.

Cheers

A new version of the flash player is available, but after I saw that
the software license agreement you have to approve is 282 pages
of print too fine to read on the screen, I decided to do without it:

Note that the Google Toolbar program should not be installed on Vista
systems where Windows Mail is used, since it causes problems in
Windows Mail. Web sites that let you do a Google search are not a
problem.

Have the same problems as others with
Windows Mail. Read every post. Everytime I go to open an attachment
Windows Mail freezes. Based on all posts this is not a anti-virus program
problem which leads me to believe this is a Microsoft problem. To many
people are having this problem. Has anybody come up with a solution rather
than the multitude of guess work that is going on out there.

In many cases it *is* an antivirus problem. Which antivirus are you
running?

I have eAcceleration (StopSign program). Prior to going back to system
restore (out of the box beginning) was able to get the attachments.
Something happen and I and many others don't have the answer.

I'm not familiar with that antivirus program. In fact, you're the first person
to report using that program since I became a regular responder here
in February 2007.
The first thing to try is to turn off any email scanning done by your antivirus.
Email scanning causes nothing but problems and is unnecessary, see
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

Turning off email scanning may not be sufficient.
The only way to prove or disprove that your antivirus
is the culprit is to uninstall it, then try Windows Mail again. I assume
you can always reinstall if there is no difference.

If turning off the email scanning function does not resolve your problem,
consider upgrading to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to
suffering bad effects from overly aggressive antivirus programs:

You've turned off the option to block unsafe attachments?
