Describe the exact steps you're using to try to open it.

this takes me to Documents and settings folder Microsoft, then Outlook and
displays the file "Outlook.pst" and when I click on it it says Properties
for this information service must be defined prior to use. Then another
screen says this is not a personal folder file.

I go to File, Open, Personal Folder File (.pst)

What does the INbox Repair Tool say when you use it on this file?

Anyway I have solved the problem. I created a new Personal Folder and
copied the files from my Archive. In order to be able to receive my mail I
had to change my pop3 back to pop6 and smtp1 using ports 25 and 110 though.
I hope this is OK.
Thanks again

Out look 2000 can't open .pst files

I reinstalled Outlook 2000 and can't open the Outlook.pst file which I saved
and is on my desk top now. When I go to "import", "import another program
or file", "personal folder file (pst)" I browse to my folder on the desk top
and it says
"Properties for this information service must be defined prior to use". I
can however import the new .pst file that I made which is the Outlook backup.
I have read how one guy solved this BUT I need the "explanation for dummies"
someone help please???

Have you created your mail profile by configuring things with the Mail
applet in Control Panel?
