Can't open Outlook 2002

B

Betty J

I set up Outlook to run when I start the computer on Windows XP. It always
first asks for the password. Recently, after I type in the password and hit
<enter>, the program just hangs, so I use Task Manager to end it. When I
choose to terminate, the system says that the program (Outlook) is waiting
for a response from me. But there is no prompt showing on the screen telling
me what to do.

When I run Outlook again under Safe mode as an alternative, everything runs
fine. I've tried System Restore, but eventually the same problem reoccurs.
At first the hanging problem was occasional, now it freezes all the time
whether starting up or at any other time, except for Safe Mode.

What do I do?

Since Outlook works in Safe Mode you can skip step one but it's always nice
to check it for errors.

1) try running scanpst.exe on your Personal Folder

2) try renaming outcmd.dat to .old and restart Outlook. All the Toolbars
will reset then. This is quite a common problem with Outlook . The default
location for this file is:
C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook

3) try recreating the profile in Control Panel-> Mail-> button Show Profiles

4) try running Outlook with the /safe switch from your Start-> Run window.
When this works run Help-> Detect and Repair

5) try disabling individual add-ons in Tools-> Options-> tab Other-> button
Advanced E-mail Options...
