Can't open games and certain files, help!

Yes, I bought a computer with Windows XP on it, and I've been having
problems with opening any even slightly old games and even a few normal
files. It usually turns out when I try to install/open the file a
warning message will come up ->

C:\WINDOWS\System32\Autoexec.nt. the system file is not suitable for
running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. choose close to
terminate application.

Is there any way to fix this or is it simply xp blocking out old games?
Any help would be nice. ^^*
