Can't Network 98SE & XP PCs

E

Ed Hardee

I am having trouble trying to network a 98SE PC with one running XP.
I'm using a D-Link DCM-200 cable modem and a D-Link DI-704P router.
I have three 98SE desktops and a 98SE laptop PC, all networking
beautifully
but I upgraded one desktop to XP but the others are jealous and won't
recognize
it. I can't upgrade some because of periphial driver availability
problems and hardware
compatibility.

Hi,

Disable the firewall on the XP machine. This is a known issue. Check on the
advanced tab of the network connection properties.

The XP firewall is active.
Start/right click My NetworkPlaces, choose properties.
Right click Local Area Connection, choose properties.
Click on Advanced Tab, and disable the XP firewall.

Since you are hooked up through a router, you should be safe from inbound
traffic. If concerned about outbound, you will have to purchase firewall
software, or wait for SP2 to be released.
