Can't log on @ start up

My kids laptop won't let her log on. She can't even get to that screen. I
think she has a virus. She has an external disk drive also. Do anyone know
how to remove the virus without having to log on cause i can't. I don't want
to send it to Geek Squad because they charge $200.

Do you get any errors messages? Does the laptop restart before it gets to the
log on screen? Does it just hang at a certain time? Have you tried going into
safe mode?

It won't even go to the log in screen. I can press f 2 to get the setup
screen and that's it. My friend says that I have a virus.

What does it do? Does it just hang or does it give you an error message? Or
does it reboot on a continuous loop? If Windows doesn't load, it doesn't
always mean that it has a virus, it COULD be a bad hard drive.

well her dad told me about it. But it does have an external cd drive. He
said that it starts up but don't do nothing else (just hangs). Also, I'm at

A few more questions, can you get into safe mode? When you are at the setup
screen, do you see the hard drive being installed and working?
