cant log into NT Server after installing windows updates

Please forgive the cross-posting:

Yesterday, we updated our (web) NT server with this month's patches.
Since rebooting, we are not able to log in. It just displays the splash
screen and never a desktop. The server seems to be fully functional
except for this glitch. I can ctrl + alt + delete and "log off" - it
even says that I'm logged on - then the display returns to the normal
logout screen. Anyone seen or heard of this?

Update - I can connect to this server via the computer management
console from another win2003 server - and can remotely turn services
off/on. Can anyone suggest which services they might try restarting to
resolve the login situation described below? I have already tried
shutdown & restart. Any other work arounds? Trying to preserve my IIS
4 settings on this NT server. Thanks - Bill
