Can't load Windows XP 2002 with Vista?

I just purchased a new computer (Dell "XPS" 430) that came witn Vista Extreme
installed. When I attempt to load my Office 2002 Professional from disc Vista
doesn't recognize it? I don't know whether my Office XP disc is damaged or
whether my version of Vista will not accept Office XP 2002?

There is no version of Vista called Extreme!

Is the DVD drive recognised by vista, or are you getting an error message
when you insert Office disk in Drive? (will not accept???????)

And, if an error message; what is it?

Uninstall the trial version of Office 2007 before installing Office XP.
Then download the latest Office XP service pack and updates from the
Microsoft Update web site.

If it is an upgrade version, there has to be a qualifying Office product
already installed, and a trial version of Office 2007 would NOT qualify.

Sorry all --- for inadequate description of problem.

My preloaded system is Windows Vista Ultimate 2006. The only Microsoft
program currently installed on the new computer is Microsoft Works which came
pre-installed.
The MS Office XP Professional 2002 disc I am attempting to install is a
program that was installed on my old computer (Dell Dimension 4600) which
failed. No response at all. I tried replacing power supply - no go. I'm
hoping for a motherboard failure and not hard drive). I hope to be able to
transfer my old hard drive information, from a USB external hard drive
enclosure, to this new computer but understand I need to have the Office
program installed first.
When I try to load the disc by clicking on Setup Windows Installer comes up
with message of "preparing to Install" and runs for a substantial time and
finally gives message,"The system cannot read from the specified device."
Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying here. You would not transfer
installed programs from XP to Vista, or to another XP install (except, in
that case, by cloning the drive, which overwrites the installed OS and other
data as well). They have to be installed again.

This can mean that the disc is damaged or dirty.

I would wonder if you can do this, which might isolate an issue with the
drive or disc: Create a folder on your hard disk, perhaps call it
OfficeInstall. Open two Explorer windows, one to look at that folder, the
other to show the Office CD. Select everything in the CD window, and drag
and drop it to the hard disk folder.

If it doesn't copy, there's likely a problem with the drive or disc. If it
does, try running Setup from the hard disc folder.

Thanks I had a damaged disc. Obtained a new disc and it worked fine.
