can't join domain

J

Jill

I can't join my computer to the company domain. I have the
same TCP/IP settings as the other computers, I have a
computer account on the server Active Directory.I can find
the domain in Network neighborhood, and can use the
server's resources. When I try to join, first I get a
message that Windows cannot find an account for your
computer on the ___ domain. It asks for an administrator
name and password, which I supply, then I get the message
Network path not found. Could this be related to our
FVM318 VPN firewall router? And how can I fix it?

I don;t see how the firewall would have anything to do with internal
communication.

I would try to delete the account, then do it from the workstation and
supply the user admin/password so it will create it for you that way and see
what happens. You can also try using either the NetBIOS or the DNS domain
name to add it.

Hopefully only the internal DNS is the only DNS in your machines' IP
properties (of any AD machine, DC or client). Otherwise unexpected results
will occur.

Otherwise, getting any errors in AD or the client?

I already tried deleting the account- I still got the same
messages, so I remade the account on the server. I don't
understand how, when I try to join the domain, it can't
find the account, when I can look at it in AD, and it's got
exactly the same properties as all the accounts that are in
the domain. And why does it say the network path can't be
found when it has the same TCP/IP properties as all the
other computers, including the server/DC? That's why I'm
suspicious of the router. This and some other problems
never came up before we switched routers.. Otherwise, we're
getting no other errors on client or server. In your reply,
I'm not sure what you mean by "try using either the NetBios
or the DNS domain name to add it." For example use the
computer name JILL and the domain I want to join as PETE,
how would I use NetBios or the DNS domain name to add it?
Thanks,
Jill

Who is hosting DNS in the domain? Is that server configured to look to
itself for DNS name resolution? The following article may be of assistance
as well.

Thanks, that did help. Aftyer looking at that article,I
checked the DNS settings on the server, added myself to
the DNS list, made a reverse lookup zone, then on my
computer, I put the server IP as the preferred DNS server
(all other computers just have the automatic, and when I
run ipconfig, two other numbers show up instead of the
server.) After doing these, it finally found an account
with my name on the server and let me join the domain. I
don't know if the first two steps were needed, but the
third is what did the trick.
