Can't install XP/Win2k3

Hi,

I have an issue with a PC not being able to install Windows XP Pro or
Windows Server 2003 Enterprise. I have successfully installed Windows
98 and Debian onto the same hardware.

I have also taken the liberty of replacing memory and the graphics
card, leaving the only interchangable thing as the CPU. The
motherboard has been reset to use safe and default settings.

My error happens at the same point in installation, when installing
device drivers, not long after the screen flicks on and off and on
(graphics card detection?).

My error during the most recent reinstall attempt with WinXP Pro, was;

A process or thread crucial to system operation has unexpetecdly exited
or been terminated

*** STOP: 0x000000F4 (0x00000003, 0x81EEF6D8, 0x81EEF84C, 0x805FA7A8)

The harddrive has been fdisk'd, formatted, formatted in Linux, you name
it. Seems fine with Win98 or Linux, it's just XP/Win2k3 that can't
install..

Cheers

Do you still have Debian and Win98 installed on the drive? If so ,
you might try getting rid of Debian and the linux partitions. Add Debian
after Winxp and Win 2003 server are installed.

The thing I'm trying to do is to just install WinXP Pro on there,
nothing else. The other operating systems I installed simply to see if
they would work, and they did.

My problem is that I've swapped out all possible hardware (except CPU)
and still WInXP Pro won't install, with the above error.. There is
nothing else on the harddrive.

Not plugged into a network during install is it? Try unplugging it...

A computer's working with Win9x is absolutely _no_ indication that it
will support WinXP or Win2K3. Computer components designed
for use with Win9x/Me very often fail to meet WinXP's and Win2K3's much
more stringent hardware quality requirements. In particular, WinXP and
Win2K3 are quite sensitive to borderline defective motherboards, RAM,
and hard drives that may have seemed to have worked fine with Win9x/Me.

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP or Win2K3? This information will be found at the
PC's manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:
(http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many models
in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's consumer-class
Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K before it, is quite
sensitive to borderline defective or substandard hardware (particularly
motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will still support Win9x.

Hi,

Thanks for the advice. I probably haven't been clear on a few issues.
This PC has run WinXP before. It was only after a format for a clean
installation that it stopped being able to install it. The hardware is
only a year old, Athlon XP 2600+, 512 DDR400 on an ASROCK all-in-one
mobo. Couldn't read the actual model number off it, but it definately
was XP compliant on the packaging.

In brief, this hardware has for the past 12 months run XP/Win2k3, with
no issues.

Cheers

My only things left to replace now are the mobo, cpu (which passes with
stress test utilities) and the HDD (also passes stress tests)
