Can't install windows service pack 1a

When I try to install the service pack on my xp pro it
tells me my product key is invalid. I bought the computer
from a friend who moved overseas and couldn't take it
with him, he bought it from some store that closed down,
so I can't go complain to them, What could I do to get
service pack 1a on my computer. I need service pack 1 so
I can use my dvd player and cd burner both the programs
don't work right with xp and the manufacturer recommended
a hotfix but the hot fix requires sp1 to install

If you are getting the following error message when attempting to update to SP1:

Error Message: The Product Key Used to Install Windows Is Invalid
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;326904&Product=winxp

You'll have to purchase a new "Full Version" of Windows XP Professional
and perform a "Repair Install" using the new Windows XP Pro CD and Product Key
that comes with it. (You cannot simply change the Product Key)
