Cant install programs after fresh install

I have just completed a fresh install of Vista Home Premium on my
Toshiba Satellite A200 however, whenever I try to install a program
Vista log's out and takes me to the login screen.

Has anyone heard of this issue before and any way to resolve it?

I suggest you reinstall the O/S again. What do you have to loose at this
point?

It happens with anything I try to install. Service Pack 1, Window
Updates, Office 2003, VLC Player etc.

I have just done another fresh install but it is happening again.

Just got a bit of an update: I have tried installing a copy of Vist
Home Basic and the same problem occurs.

Further, I have located three windows programs / features that sto
repsonding when trying to install something:
-Windows Defender
-Task Scheduler
-Task Manager.

Don't know if this has anything to do with the problem or no

How are you installing?
Are you setting the CD/DVD Drive to be 1st in the Boot Order, inserting the
Vista DVD, then rebooting, deleting the existing Vista partition, formatting,
and installing?

You know, malware can still hang around even if you have formatted the
HD and installed the O/S fresh.

Malware could have been your problem all along with programs not
starting or responding, particularly Windows Defender and Task Manager,
with Task Manager being used by you to see what is running on the
computer, and malware can knockout Task Manager so that you can't see
what is running.

May I suggest this.

You can burn yourself a copy of Ultimate Boot CD and use that to format
the HD instead of using Windows Format, to make sure you wipe the HD
clean.

I used to have a partition just for windows and one for everything else.
i have tried deleting it, making a new one, formatting it then
installing XP. Once XP has installed I then installed my Vista Home
Premium Upgrade.

Did the same thing with a standalone version of Home Basic and also
tried doing it by having only 1, large partition. Every time I get the
same result.

I don't set the DVD as the 1st boot drive, just use the boot select on
startup to make it boot from DVD instead of HDD
