can't install any service pack

I upgraded to Windows 2000 Pro and I am unable to install
any service pack update. I receive an error message from
microsoft telling me if I see this error continuously, go
to the windows 2000 support page to look for 'problems
downloading service pack' to find an alternative to
download without an internet connection. However, after
numerous searches, string searches, google searches, etc.
I cannot find any other solutions and I am still unable to
install the service packs. They are all horendously slow,
and stall part way through and never complete if I try to
save the file and install later, or just run it from the
microsoft site. As a result, even with firewall
protection and anti virus software completely updated, I
have been attacked by three worms and trojan horses. One
took me three hours to completely remove, because I can't
install the security patches necessary to close these
vulnerabilities.

DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS BEFORE I REFORMAT AND
SEND 2000 BACK TO MICROSOFT WITH A VERY LONG COMPLAINT
LETTER (WHICH I KNOW WON'T BE LOOKED AT).

If I were you, I would get behind a NAT router. If you can't get the
updates run, the router will block the worms. You can get a cheap
Linksys BEFSR41 for $50, or less if on sale or by rebate. If you're
on dialup, you'll need another model, but that can still be done.

Once you get behind a router, you can download the updates "for
network installation". You have to search carefully to find how to
get the updates for network installation; Microsoft doesn't make it
easy for you. The most critical update, MS03-039, is available from a
link on:

which takes you to:

It sounds like you may have malware affecting your computer which may
interfere with the update downloading. You may first want to run
Spybot S&D and HijackThis (both small, and free). Start here for
instructions:

You might be better off finding a computer with a fast broadband
connection, and downloading the update to copy to CD or something.

Hang in there. I'll bet this works faster for you than sending 2000
back to Microsoft with a very long complaint letter.
