Can't insert MPG files into PPT presentation

D

DPeak

When inserting MPG files on any kind PPT
displays "PowerPoint couldn't insert a movie from the
selected file. Either the file is non-standard or
QuickTime is not installed properly."

All MPG files are standard and play both in QT player and
MS Media Player normally. QT is installed correctly with
version 6.3. Inserted AVI files work correctly.

When I do Insert/Object Media Clip and select an MPG file,
PPT displays "Mplay32.exe has generated errors and will be
closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program.
An error log is being created." The event viewer shows
now error or log. PPT hangs with objects open and I am
forced to terminate it with the TaskList manager.

All files run normally with Media Player and all File
Types are correctly linked to the MP.

AVI files insert into PPT and play normally imbedded in
PPT. MPG files do neither on this machine. These
presentations run normally on other machines--so the
problem seems to be localized.

I suspect QT has quashed your MCI settings.

Read http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PowerPoint/multimedia.htm
very carefully, especially the part about how to reset your MCI
settings.

A quick test to see who "owns" the MPG file type is to simply
double-click the movie file with the .mpg extension. If QT launches,
then do what Echo says. If WiMP launches, then we have a different
problem.

If something else launches... Well, we'll handle that one if resetting
your MCI settings doesn't work.
