Can't hear audio in timeline/storyboard

When I am using MM my computer will not put out audio when I play the
timeline/storyboard, but it will work when I play the clips in my collection
file. They are the same clips, and I just can't get it to work. And i have MM
2.0.332.

The files were AVI files, I fixed the problem though. Well, sort of. I
recorded the
sound files as a narration while playing the clips in WMP by hooking a cord
from the mic. to the headphone jack, then I put the soundless AVI and the
narration into a WMV file with WMM, and made my movie. Then, when I tried the
next clip, (AVI like the first one), it worked just fine without any extra
recording of sound.
