Can't get to MICROSOFT.COM

G

GH

I have been trying to access the Updates page of MS for some time and
I keep getting an ADMINISTRATOR ONLY error. As well I cannot get on to
the Microsoft site (microsoft.com), I get the following error

Gateway Timeout
The following error occurred:
Server unreachable

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please contact the administrator.

Any thoughts?

I have run Adaware, 3 AV programs and a couple of other sundry
programs and nothing.

Thanks

Are you able to access any other sites on the Internet? If possible, try
downloading and running these programs ;

CWShredder: Free
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.php

McAfee Avert Stinger - Free
http://tinyurl.com/2esu7

HiJackThis: Free

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

Run the HJT. At the bottom of the window box, there is a tab that will say
Save Log. Click it and save the log. Go to the folder where you saved the
log and copy it. Then go to
the site below and post your log. The experts at this site will evaluate
the log and post back their findings and recommendations. Remember, you
must return to the site to get your answer, they don't do personal e-mail
replies.

http://forum.aumha.org/

Go to the HiJackThis section on the forum list and click to open. You can
post as a guest, or create a logon profile. It's also a good site to keep
for reference.

OK I'll bite how do you do that with WIN98?

This is a standalone computer that has never seen a network or a login
of anykind.

Thanks anyways

Yes, you have been hijacked/redirected, and are not going where you
think .. looks like the (bad) site you have been redirected to has maybe
been shut down by the net cops, hence your error message.

Look at your 'hosts' file. Is 'www.microsoft.com' being redirected
somewhere?

Try 'shredder', or 'hijackthis', if spybot S&D (www.kolla.security.de,
iirc) didn't fix it for you.

In addition to the Adaware and other programs, you might also download and
keep updated the SpywareBlaster program. It helps to prevent spyware from
getting through to your system. It is also recommended that you should run
SpyBot along with Adaware. What one does not detect the other usually does.
Be aware that SpyBot does not update as often as Adaware, but, they each
have different detections. That is why they make a good combination. :)

Is the Update and microsoft.com the only sites on the Internet you can't
access? Have you tried approaching the Updates from another site? What
browser are you using? Have you tried a Repair, if possible, such as with
IE? Perhaps a bit more information regarding your system would help.

I see you have Win98. You might try accessing the Win98 updates from here:
http://www.wirefire.com/channels/Guide/E1701.htm

Have you run an AV scan from DOS, such as an F-Prot type AV? There are some
viruses that can not be detected or cleaned when windows is in use, and can
only be detected using a DOS scan AV.

Don't give up.....you haven't used up all the Silver bullets yet.:)

Hi Jan,

I almost give up :) I will never let MS get the better of me...

OK I will back up a bit, I have WIN98SE, never tried another upgrade
or install, never been on a network.

Once upon a time WindowsUpdate worked but now I get the ADMINISTRATOR
ONLY error, I have gone thru all the support sections at MS and none
of the errors match, The only erro in the update log (0x800C0008) is
for WIN 2000, I don't have WIN2000 and it does not give any fixes for
win98se.

The only site I cannot get to is www.microsoft.com. I can get to the
update site but when it scans for updates I get the ADMIN ONLY error.

I have run just about every AVm spybot, HJT etc that has been
suggested

still nothing..

I forgot about F-prot, I used to use it many years ago but I forgot it
was around and frankly thought it went away.

I will run it after this..

Thanks Gord

Can you just download the update(s) to your hard drive and install from
there, instead of installing from the website? You still did not say what
browser you are using. Is it Internet Explorer or another? Internet
Explorer can be repaired via the Add/Remove program. What did they find in
your HighjackThis log? Anything that might indicate a highjacker or that
looked suspect? When were you last able to access and install updates
without a problem?

I have run into problems installing updates from the website now and then
too, and I find a way to download them and install from the hard drive, or a
CD. Have you gotten the new MS Security Update CD? It is free, and it
includes all the updates for all versions of Windows from Win98 & Win98SE
up through WinXP. All the updates can be installed using the one CD.
Doesn't help your immediate problem, but, it might work in the long run.

Hi Jan,

I'm using IE6

There were two entries in my HJT log but nothing really overt.

I reloaded win98 and IE still the same ole problems.

Can't quite remeber when I last updated, I suppose I can look in my
log file but it was some time ago..

It's tough to get the updates when you can't get on the website so
there is no way, at least that I know of, to get the updates

How does one go about getting the update CD you speak of?

Can I rename/delete my registry file and then reinstall win98?

Thanks for trying.

Were you able to fix the items found in your HJT log as instructed by the
folks on the HJT forum?

If you can, go here to order the free Security Update CD:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/cd/order.asp

If not then call 1- (866) PC SAFETY

Did you try the IE6 Repair yet? Did it repair alright?

As to your question on the Registry. As far as I know you can Export a copy
of the Registry to save a copy to a folder on your hard drive. Then try
reinstalling Win98 again.
I don't know that this will help, but, you can try. I am not that familiar
with the Registry to feel comfortable in recommending that you delete the
Registry before reinstalling Win98. Perhaps someone here who is more
experienced will offer some input on this issue.

Go to this site, download and run this program. It is free. It will tell
you everything about your system and which patches and updates you have and
need.

HI Randy,

No I can't.

FWIW I reload win98 and IE6.0 at first it did not help. But I came
back a while later and tried on a lark, now I am not 100% sure of how
I got there, But I did get onto the site. I backed out and tried again
and subsequently could not get back in.

That was a good thought though.

Boo......:(

'k. Check.

Well...sorry that we've not been able to get your problem resolved.
Hopefully, someone will find the answer for you soon. The only thing that I
can suggest at this point is to uninstall and then reinstall the IE6, and
see if that will help. If you don't have that on a CD, you can get one sent
to you from MS, or, perhaps if you can get access to another computer,
download it and burn it to a CD, then use the CD to reinstall to your
computer. It may be that something in the program got bodged somehow, and
the repair will not resolve it. You might also try resetting up your
Internet connection as well, if you haven't tried that already. Wish there
was something else I could suggest, but, I'm out of ideas at the moment.
However, you might try these newsgroups for some further assistance as well.
The folks there are really very helpful, and work with these problems all
the time, and are very experienced with IE6 and Update problems. I think
it's really worth a try.

I assume you guys meant hosts.sam (only "host"file I can find). I
opened it with notepad nothing in it but some notes on how to.

When I tried the ip number I ended up at Google after it gave up
looking.

I then tried Microsoft.com again and it worked and once again I just
tried it and same ole error.

David W. Hodgins

The only site I cannot get to is www.microsoft.com. I can get to the

Several people have suggested the hosts file, which you havn't yet
indicated you've checked (or I missed that). Also, check the lmhosts
file. Specifically, check
%Windir%\Hosts
%Windir%\Lmhosts
%System\etc\hosts
%System\etc\Lmhosts

If any of these files exist, the only entry (unless you've intentionally
added some) should be
127.0.0.1 localhost

If microsoft.com is in one of these, you probably have a variant of
the w32.yaha mass mailing worm.

Ok, maybe it isn't you, maybe it's your ISP's DNS server. You could
always put the right MS address in the 'hosts' file (as discussed) or
even simpler point your DNS server address at something other than what
you are using (i.e. another DNS server that is known to work).

(what does 'ping www.microsoft.com' (from a dos/command window) tell you
it has got for an IP address? How about a tracert www.microsoft.com?)

btw, do not expect a response to the ping, since most MS machines will
not respond.
