can't get some programs to work

I have some programs that when I try to open they flash
for just a second or don't come up at all. Some of these
include: System Restore, Search, Norton Anti-virus,
Windows Media Player and some games that I have loaded.
I bought a new Norton Anti-virus and scanned it when I
installed it and it found backdoorbeasty and removed it
but I can't get it to come up so I can register it and
run the scan again. I am running Windows XP home edition
on a Dell 2400 that is about 2 years old.

Hi, Brenda. Either your computer is not completely virus-free and/or the
installation was damaged. You do not need to register NAV in order to
scan with it. Try running Live Update by itself, from the Start>All
Programs menu. If you can't, then download the most recent virus
definitions and install them manually. Symantec's website tells how to
do this. Then scan in Safe Mode. Otherwise, you might want to either
take your computer to a good local repair shop and have them fix it for
you, or just reinstall Windows. However, you would have to do a clean
install (formatting the drive first) which would erase all data, so if
you had not backed up your files, this wouldn't be the best choice for
you.
