Can't get solid WINS install

D

I've tried uninstalling WINS and reinstalling it, but I still cannot
get a good install. I do have WINS showing in the Start menu and can
open it, but it has no database and cannot build one. In Services I
found that it is "not available as an installed service".

This is on a Dell omniplex with a single PIII-733 CPU and 256 megs
RAM. I am trying to get 5 other computers working in a wireless
network environment at school.

Symantec Antivirus Enterprise Edition 8.0 documentation seems to
indicate that I *need* WINS to be able to push install the client AV
on the other machines.

Are there any known hardware conflicts with WINS on Win200 AS?

ANYthing that any experienced folk in here will share will be greatly
appreciated.

Sincere Thanks,

J

Dennis,

You need some form of name resolution, i.e DNS, or WINS.

You can also create a text file that lists the ip address' of the machines
that you want to install the symantec av to, and import that list into the
symantec system center console. check out the following article from
symantec on this.

Excellent. Thank you Jon.

I am still going to keep trying to find a way to get a clean install
of WINS on the server though, because some of the clients are running
Win98SE and Symantec info says the solution you found won't work on
Win 95/98/ME computers.

Your find will get SOMEthing going for me though. Thanks again!
