Cant get past XP startup screen

Computer seems to be hanging up during bootup.

It goes all the way to the startup screen where it says
Windows XP Professional and it has the horizontal bar,
with bluebars that move from left to right. Then the bars
stop moving and the computer stays hung up there.

I hope my description was OK, please help!!

Disconnect everything but the monitor and reboot. Then one at a time
reconnect stuff.
