can't get microphone to work

I have tryed everything I can think of and exausted the windows help. I can
record with line in but not the microphone. The microphone muted box is not
selected. My microphone works fine in my other computer. The right-left
channel button at top of microphone section in selection and volume windows
is greyed out for some reason if that might be a clue.
Also the windows sound recorder has vanished if that has anything to do with
it.
(by the way what is the name of the windows sound recorder program or how do
I re-install it if it has been erased from the computer?)
I do have speech recognition program installed and that won't work either.

So you seem to have a hardware problem with the microphone input of this
computer.
Try to solve that, and your secondary problems may disappear. Clues
(hopefully) in:
Control Panel | System | Hardware | Device_Manager

Note that the Windows Sound Recorder (probably
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sndrec32.exe)
won't record more than one minute, so you may want to use other software.
