Can't get Form Designer to work with .Net CF v1

W

Will Chapman

I'm using VS 2005 Beta 2 with both .Net v1 and v2 installed.

When using v2 components everything works fine but if I
try to use v1 components the Form Designer doesn't display
properly in that is just shows a line of icons representing each
control.

Can anyone tell me how to fix this (using v2 is not an
option as I have 3rd party components that are not V2 ready)?

Thanks

Hi Will,

Do you have the same problem if you use the RTM version of VS 2005? Beta 2
is pretty old now.

Studio 03's designer support was achieved totally different than 05 is, so
they are not compatible. The control must be rewritten for Studio 05.

Hi there Ginny!

VS2005 isn't being shipped in the UK until mid-December so I haven't
had an opportunity to dump the Beta yet.

Hi Will,

You'll really like the RTM version once you get your hands on it. But it
looks like it won't solve your controls issue. Are these your controls so
you can redo them for CF 2, or are they 3rd party controls that will need an
upgrade?

Unfortunately they are third party controls that are primarily built
under v1. They are now releasing v2 rebuilds but, sadly, they don't
work in Beta 2. As a result I was trying to work with the v1 versions
only to find that I can't get the Form Designer to work.

At the moment I'm uninstalling everything .Net and Beta 2 with a view
of cleaning up my system to see if that will work. If not, I'll just have
to wait for mid-Dec (or Vulcan!). Or maybe try VS 2003.....

Will,

Since VS 2003 can coexist with VS 2005, that might be a good solution for
you until you have VS 2005 RTM.

Thats mmy only option now because I (in hind sight) foolishy uninstalled
VS Beta 2005 and related stuff and have spent all day trying to reinstall...
......not a chance. So now I'm forced to go back to VS2003; I'll be
trying that tomorrow and I hope I don't have the same install problems ;<

Will,

Uninstalling VS 2005 betas can be tricky, but there is a tool called
vs_uninst.exe that helps a lot. You can get it and instructions here:

I found Aaron's website over the weekend and have tried everything
he has to offer...I've stripped everything (including the .Net frameworks)
but still the installation hangs. I'm also going to try on a fresh machine
tomorrow.
