Can't get fax working

For lots of reasons, I recently reformatted my system disk and re-installed
windows and programs. My previously working external modem installed as
standard 56k now can't be "queried", showing "the port that the modem is
using is currently open by another application". MS fax shows no modems
installed and no port to install on. I can't find any applications which may
be the culprit, using services or event logs.

Any ideas?

After the format / reinstalling winxp you installed the correct drivers and
didnt rely on win update drivers?

Thanks for responding. The modem is a KTX by Edge which are out of business.
The latest drivers are pre XP and don't work. But the standard XP drivers did.

I think the problem may be a different program tying up the port, perhaps a
mistaken networking configuration, so am looking for a way to find out what
appliction is using the port.

I also meant your other hardware & chipset drivers.
Does your external modem have a reset btn/switch?
In Modems tried removing it then rebooting to let win reinstall it?

Mostly used downloaded drivers (where possible) as you suggest.

I have repeatedly reset switch, to no avail.

If you open Phone & Modems in Control Panel, does the Advanced tab indicate
the port or Advanced allow you to change the port.
Or if you add a modem does this help with configeration?

I can change from COM1 to 3 but to no avail.

I can't add a modem, because no ports are listed.

If you cannot add a modem, because no ports are avilable I think that would
indicate a problem with your mobo chipset drivers or maybe conflicts
