Can't get beyond "Welcome" screen

I updated (flashed) my BIOS a while ago, and things aren't
working right. It caused a resource conflict between my
old 33.6K modem and COM 2, so I decided to pull it out and
put a faster one in - a 56k LT Win Modem. And that's when
my real troubles began. I turned on the computer and XP
started normally and got to the "welcome" screen. Suddenly
this little dialogue box popped up with a "yes and a "no"
button. There was no text anywhere to tell what to do -
the title bar and the area above the buttons where you'd
expect to find some information was empty, save the 'yes'
and 'no' on the buttons. So I pushed "yes" and
the "Welcome screen gave way to the desktop's background
image (no icons or task bar) and I could hear the hard
disk grating away. It stopped, and the "Welcome" screen
reappeared and then said it was logging me off. So it does
that, and now I have 2 options on the "Welcome" screen: I
can click on my screen name or "administrator," something
it's only done in safe safe mode until now. I can
select 'administrator' or my name and I'll get the little
box again. Pushing 'yes' or 'no' makes no difference - I
still get redirected back to the "welcome" screen that
asks me who I want to log on as. I'm able to get into Safe
Mode OK, and I don't get the little box. I did a "System
Restore" and a "Start Using Last Known Good Configuration"
but that didn't help. Strangely enough, when I tried to
get into Safe Mode with networking, I got a different
little box that had no text, just a little "ok" button on
it that initiated the loop I described earlier. I took the
modem out, put the old one back in, and got no
improvement. Can anyone help? This totally disables my
computer and it's REALLY annoying!

Thanks!
