can't fix desktop

I have this bar on the left side of my desktop that has folder tasks, other
places, and details tabs on them. I don't know where it came from, but how
do I get rid of it?

thanks! that has been driving me crazy. Now I have boxes around my icons,

I pulled down the Dougknox exec but it would not run for me. I keep geetting
a message that says the value is correct as it is. What do I do now. I have
no control over my desktop.
