Can't find old inbox messages in old .pst file

A while back, to correct a problem I had with outlook, I backed up my old
..pst files and created a new .pst file. I removed the old .pst files from
the list with the remove command.

Now I need to go back and see some of my old messages. I tried opening the
old file while in outlook, it opens but the inbox isn't there. When I try to
open it from explorer, with outlook closed, I get an error message... Can not
open file. doesn't exist or don't have permission or in use. I don't think
any of that is the case.

I am using outlook 2002. In XP.

Thanks for any help!

How are you opening the old PST file? Open Outlook, use File > Open as your
best method.

A PST file is an Outlook data file, you must open it with Outlook.

You may have some errors in your old Outlook file, run scanpst.exe against
it. If it finds errors, run it again until no further errors are found. To
find scanpst.exe, simply use your file/folder search function.

I am using File, Open, Open data file. When the old .pst file opens it shows
Calendar, Deleted Items, Journal, sent items, Tasks.

I presume the old file did have errors, which is why I had to create a new
..pst file

I am looking for that program right now.

Thanks so much!

Of course it will show that. Those are the folders in your old PST. WHat
happens when you select one of those folders? What do you see inside it?

Outlook is, of course, the program you use to create new PSTs.
File>New>Outlook Data File.
