can't encrypt

I thought I followed all of the instructions for encrypting folders in XP
(yes the volume is formatted with the NTFS file system), but the encrypt
contents option is always greyed out, preventing me from encypting. I am
using the XP home edition. Do I need Pro to encrypt?

Are there any other (free) alternatives?

Yes. Not supported in Home. And a dangerous tool, too, you *must* be
sure to have certificates backed up or the data may be permanently
irretrievable. As in practice the files are transparently decrypted
when the owner logs in, there is not more security than provided by the
logon password - probably little - anyway

If you wish to encrypt your documents, you'll need to
upgrade to Windows XP Professional. File encryption
is not available with Windows XP Home Edition.

Yes, you need Pro. That was your question.
