Can't empty recycle bin

I have a corrupted 'long file name' in my recycler folder that can't be
deleted - I have already searched previous posts for similar issues and
answers from those incidents aren't helpful, any insight will be highly
appreciated.

Hi Scriptomaniac

Can you be a bit more specific about the problem? What is the long file
name you mention, and what problem is it causing exactly?

You don't mean the long folder name that begins S-1-5-21, do you?

Go to Kelly's site at http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm. Click
on "R", scroll to "Recycle", and look at some of the suggestions.

Rock, thanks for the link, but that url is not valid - broken link. Nightowl,
when I try emptying the recycle bin I get the prompt " Are you sure you
want to delete 'WINDOWS'? " followed by 'Cannot delete Cisco Aironet 350
Series Client Adapter Installation_files: The file name you specified is not
valid or too long. Specify a diferent file name.'

Hence my next line of action which is, at the command prompt, >cd C:\recycler:

Click Start > run, type cmd, click OK. (Command Prompt opens)
Type cd C:\recycler <enter> (directory changes to C:\recycler)
Type dir /ah <enter> (shows hidden files)

Directory of C:\RECYCLER

Finally, I return to my recycle bin and this hidden file is still there -
any suggestions?

Have you tried:

Right click on Recycle Bin icon > Properties > set max size (pct) to 0%

Hi Scriptomaniac

Try this:

[1] Open a Command window and shut down any other running programs.
Ctrl-Alt-Del to open the Task Manager.

[2] In Task Manager look on the Processes tab and select Explorer.exe,
Click on the End Process button. (Your desktop and taskbar will
disappear and you'll be left with just Task Manager and the Command
window. Don't panic! :) Leave Task Manager open and return to the
Command window.

[3] Now at the prompt type:
rd /s /q C:\Recycler <enter>
type: exit <enter> to close the Command window.

[4] Go back to Task Manager and on the Applications tab click the button
for New Task. In the box that pops up type: Explorer <OK>. Your desktop
should return to normal. Close Task Manager and reboot.

[5] When you return to Windows don't worry if the bin icon still shows
full. Put a test file in the bin and then right-click to empty it.
Hopefully now it should all be working.

Good luck! Do please let us know how you get on.

I got a new one... there's a deleted prior user on my desktop that has 178MB
of stuff in his recycle bin that I would very much like to get rid of... (my
company deleted his user profile without emptying his recycle bin and it had
over 580 files in it)... I inherited the desktop, and I am trying to clean it
up but that chunk of recyccle bin files will not go away after running
WindowWasher. How can I find those files and get rid of them?
