can't download software/drivers

IE6 works fine to browse but when I try to download any
software or browser I get a little symbol with a
circle,square & triangle but nothing downloads--I think
it's mostly from ftp sites--i.e., HP for a printer driver
Microsoft has a knowledgebase article about it--816037-
but no fix in the article

What file type?

If it is only .exe files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.
Netscape-Style Plug-ins Do Not Work After Upgrading Internet Explorer

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
The key does not normally exist.

Thanks much--it seems to have fixed the problem-- I think
it was happening when I was trying to download .exe files--
I removed the .exe key and things work fine
