Can't delete a user

I am running XP and have several accounts set up. One account has trouble
logging on, starting Internet Explorer , running Word, etc. But all other
accounts are working correctly. I decided to create a new account and delete
the old one, to see if it solves the problem. When I try to delete the old
account, I get an error message "Could not complete the operation due to
error 8007040". What should I do?

In the command prompt, try the following command

net user /delete username

So if the user name is William then you would type

net user /delete William

Once the user account has been deleted, you will then need to delete the
user account profile under the Documents and Settings folder.

I got a corrupted user profile and had to create a new one. After saving
pertinent information/files, I tried to delete my original user account, but
kept getting the "could not complete the operation due to error 80070402"
message. Finally, I went into administrator mode, told it to delete files
instead of keep files, and it finally allowed the original profile to be
deleted.

I tried the original reply suggestion and that just would not work.
Hopefully, if anyone else runs into this problem, my solution will help them.
