can't delete 0 byte shortcuts

I recently deleted some downloads but the shortcuts still show up when I type
the name into search. The path is
recent items (c:\users\admin\appdata\roaming\microsoft\windows)
but when I attempt to delete the file, I get an error message saying that
"this is no longer located in
c:\users\admin\appdata\roaming\microsoft\windows\recent." I am asked to
"verify the item's location and try again." The properties for the files
indicate they are shortcuts of 0 byte size under the general tab but the
original size is recorded under details. Security tab indicates "the
requested security information is either unavailable or can'r be displayed."
Deleting files is a fairly common procedure and I can't believe I'm having
this much trouble with it. Could someone please help.

The files that you see in the Recent Items are not real files. They are
simply a list of file names that were recently opened by you. You can right
click the Start Button and select Properties. On that dialog, you should see
an option called "Store and display a list of recently opened files." Remove
the check mark from that option and click Apply/OK. This should clear that
list of files.
