Can't defragment my laptop

B

Bobby

My laptop is 18 months old and is slowing down badly.

I plan to buy more memory for it but would also like to defragment the HD.
The problem is that the tools I use (Windows defrag, Norton defrag and
Diskeeper Pro) don't work. They never complete (stick around 10-20%) - even
if I leave it overnight.

The disk is 80% full so there is some space to defragment.

Any ideas how I can speed-up this baby? It's a Samsung V25 laptop (Pentium
P4 with 256Mb RAM and 40Gb HD).

Cheers.

Uninstall all those crap defragging software's, and leave just the original
that came with the operating system. Temporarily disable the screen save
mode, and any features that will put the machine to standby.

Re-start the machine in the safe-mode, and then do the defragmentation. It
should work, using the original that came with the operating system.

Files that are being held opened by actively running software's will not be
moveable. In the safe mode, most of the drivers and caches are not active,
and thus will become moveable during the defragmentation process.
