can't create a recurring appt/event

I have Outlook 2003 running under Vista HP-64; and have been for about six
months.
My wife just about killed me because I "forgot" the wedding anniversary. I
didn't forget, Outlook didn't remind me of the recurring appt I created long
time ago. After that, I created several different (weekly, monthly, annual)
recurring appts to test the system; Outlook won't send reminders for anything
except a non-recurring appt. Given all the recurring appts I have in
Outlook, this problem is really causing some grief. I haven't archived my
Outlook email in a while - I'm wondering if there is a memory limit for
non-archived data?

There is no "memory limit". Where are you trying to send the reminders?
Are you using any addins or an integrated virus scanner?

I'm not sending anything anywhere; I open Outlook to read email and also to
wait for the "reminder" dialogues to show up. I'm not seeing reminders for
most of my stored recurring events.
I also just discovered another anomaly - I have two mail folders named
"Personal Folders", which are identical in size. There's no way to delete
either folder, as the "Close" option is grayed-out. I loaded Outlook on this
computer 6 months ago. I switched out the new pst file with the pst file
from an old computer. Somehow, I ended up with two "Personal Folders", when
I need only one.

I have no Outlook add-ins. The only virus scanner I use is McAfee, which is
provided by Comcast. I've been using McAfee & Outlook for years without the
problem that showed up recently.

Your profile is all messed up - switching out pst's will do that. You can
try to repair it using instructions at
http://www.outlook-tips.net/howto/ghosts.htm or make a new one. That may be
the cause of the reminders not firing.

Diane,
Thx. I got rid of the ghost folder using a tip at your suggested site. I
didn't use the registry method, I used two pst files called Outlook1 &
Outlook2.
As soon as I fixed the ghost issue, I set up an annual recurring event to
see if the reminder would work. I set the event to start tomorrow with the
advance reminder set to 3 days. The reminder dialogue should have showed up
as soon as I hit "save & close" for the new event. It didn't show up, even
after I closed & re-opened Outlook.
I agree with you in that I've probably got a corruption somewhere; I assume
it's in the registry... I suppose removing Outlook (from the computer) and
reloading it is the next step?

Reinstalling Outlook will not affect existing mail profiles. Use the Mail
applet in Control Panel to create a new profile.

website. Apparently I need to find "Mail Setup", and I get there by finding
the "Mail" icon in Control Panel in one of two places; either in classic view

You must enable viewing the 32 bit Control Panels before you'll see it.

resolve the problem, as the new profile doesn't send reminders for numerous
recurring appts I set to occur in the next two days (with the advance
reminder set at 3 days). I set up two 1-shot appts on same days, same
advance, and got reminders for both of them immediately after hitting 'save &
close.'

Happens to me, too. Apparently recurring appointments are handled

I went to "Remove Programs" in Control Panel intending to yank & reinstall
Outlook. But it wouldn't let me uninstall just one program, it wanted to
uninstall Office in its entirety; which I didn't want to do. There was
another option for "Repair", which I used. That seemed to solve the problem,
as my recurring events are now working again.

I mentioned this to our IM guy at work. He was familiar with the problem,
as the same thing happened to his network. He said MS issued a patch, which
had an unusual rqmt; the patch wasn't activated until the "Repair" was
manually invoked.
