Windows XP Can't copy program to Laptop

I am currently running a POS program at a Bookstore on a desktop running Windows XP PRO on the C drive.I have installed another external USB harddrive The POS program works perfectly on the C drive and also works on the external USB drive on the desktop..
I then take the USB external drive with all folders copied and install on my Laptop.When I run the program it indicates "Unable to locate files" and " files and folders have been moved" If I reinstall on original desktop ,they work fine.
The file extensions are PDB,PLF and POS.
Is it possible that a backup program might work.The data is all inventory data and am trying to protect and store on external drive off prem.I'm lost,any help will be greatly appreciated.
