Can't connect to networked Brother printer

I have recently upgraded my main computer to Vista HP but now I can't connect
to my networked Brother printer which is connected to my XP-based "server"
computer - although it worked fine before the upgrade!

The printer is found in the network search and the pop-up is displayed to
agree to the installation of the printer driver but then I get the error:
Windows cannot connect to the printer. Operation could not be completed
(error 0x000003e3).

What does this mean?

Help please!

Try this, it worked for me on my Dell A940 & also on another member's Dell
A960 today. Let me know if it works or not.

After installing drivers, go to Control Panel > Printers
-Right click on the printer, go to Properties, then the Ports Tab. Disable
"Enable bidirectional support"
-Then, if yours is like mine, you can then print.

Thanks, J, but bidirectional support was not enabled! So, I'm still stuck.

The Brother is actually on a USB port on my "server" and, like I said, it
worked fine in an all XP environment, but Vista "cannot connect".

Hi again, Cari,

I worked through that with no change! I have access to an HP photosmart 7762
also connected to the same XP computer - but I still get the same error when
trying to connect to the Brother HL1230 - it tries to install the driver over
the network then reports the 0x000003e3 error - which I've searched the MS
site for but can't find, so I don't know what it means!

Normally this is due to incompatible drivers.

Try installing Vista drivers on the XP machine. Sometimes the vendor does
not support this. In this case you will need to create a local printer on
the Vista machine that targets a Local Port with the name
\\XPmachine\printershare. If you have spaces in the printer share name
rename to one word.

Didn't do me any good. Was the problem solved with the drivers on the XP
machine or with the local port. I tried the local port on my vista machine
but when I put in \\myxp\printershare it just said the network name cannot be
found. I can find the printer when browsing.

I am worried if the problem has to be solved by loading vista drivers onto
my xp machine it will stop all my other printers working.
