Can't change font type or size in word 2007

This is a problem I ran into occasionally with Old Outlook (2003 or so?) and
now I run into with new Word, 2007.
The problem is when you want to change font type or size, you select the
text you want to change, you enter whatever you want, say Arial 10, AND
NOTHING HAPPENS! Zilch!! No error message and no change in font. It acts like
the font has changed so when I select the text again, it will now say Arial
10, but it hasn't changed from what it was.

Just as I had with old Outlook, I have no idea why I'm able to change font
type and size most of the time but not all. As usual, online help was totally
useless.

Any idea why this might be happening? TIA

In Word 2007, click on Office Button | Word Options | Advanced | scroll
down to the "Show document content" section and uncheck the "Use draft
font in Draft and Outline views" box | OK.
