Can't Change Default Search Engine

I've had to do a destructive recovery (hard drive
reformat).
Before the reformat, I had used Google as my search engine
in IE6 address bar. Since the reformat, I can not get IE6
to accept Google as my preferred search engine.
I go to Start, Search, and do the highlight Google, then
click OK, all to no avail.
How do I get IE6 to accept Google as my search preference?
I've also downloaded and installed the IE6 Service Pack 1

Reset the default Search entries:

[or] http://www.google.com/default.reg

Right click on the Registry file, select "merge" - follow the prompts, accept the Registry
changes.
