Generally usb capture is at a low level-
I've tried Windows Movie Maker, VideoWave 4 and WinDV all with the
same
result, no video or audio captured using FireWire. All 3 program can
control the camera with the on-screen buttons, Movie Maker even
correctly displays the tape position, so there must be communication
between the camera and the computer, right? I've tried replacing the
SP2 drivers with the SP1 (apparently this works with PAL cameras but
not NTSC), I've tried a different computer all without success.-

Just because the cam can be controolled doesn't mean it is ok. What
worries
me is that you cannot use it on another machine either. I'd look for
machine
3 and 4 to test on, try for Win 98 and XP SP1 machines.
The-
fact that the software that came bundled with the camera can't even
detect a firewire device is a little bit of a concern but then again
the readme.txt file seems to indicate that it was written for Win2000
and XP was an afterthought.-
These apps are designed for USB capture, so no need to worry at all.-
I've read on line that JVC is not 100% complient with MicroSoft's
generic AVC driver and that JVC outputs in MPEG1 format and either or
both are the cause of the problems. Can anyone confirm/deny either
of
these?-
When using firewire it should output the dv signal it recorded. This
will
become dv-avi on a pc and .mov on a Mac.

When I try to capture in Movie Maker or VideoWave using USB I get
error
messages ranging from "XXX has encountered an unspecific error" or
Movie
Maker will state "a device has too many occurances to fire from" or
somthing like that. I know that the USB is working properly since I
am
able to use my digital camera, MP3 player and USB printer without
problems.-
Movie Maker etc are all designed to work with firewire, not usb.
Also, I have a Sharp VL-H860 analog video camera that will-
output thorough a Belkin RCA-to-USB convertor. The JVC camera will
also output through the convertor using the S Video and a/v jacks but
create MPEG files that are unusable in Movie Maker (which supports
the
previous statement about the output format). And lets face it, I
have
a digital camera to take advantage of the higher throughput and
quality
of USB2 and FireWire,-
You have a digital cam to use firewire, USB2 will not give the same
results.
if I wanted to use S Video through the convertor I-
would still be using the old Sharp camera.

Over the weekend I loaded some clips into WMM and tried
-outputting- them as DV to my camera. Guess what? Everything works
fine. I am baffeled why I can capture *from* the computer *to*the
camera but not the other way around.
Doesn't this confirm that the computer, firewire card andcable are all functioning properly?
I was advised on another website to buy Pinnacle Studio 9 because it
was capable of capturing just about any type of video/audio stream.
Opinions? Suggestions? A large hammer to smash my camera with?
