Can't capture video

I can't capture video in either Movie Maker or WinDV. When I click on
capture, it starts for about 3 seconds, then freezes. I am using a Canon
ZR830, Windows XP, Service Pack 3. All drivers are updated.

Since the problem affects both programs and the camcorder and firewire port
are "working properly" according to device manager, I believe the problem is
with XP.

Nobody over inthe Movie Maker forum or any other boards seems to know how to
fix it. Is this an XP problem?

Is there a way to get actual support for this product?

Is this a recent failure ( worked previously ) ? If so I'd first approach
it
with a System Restore.

Some times when things stop working the most likely cause is any recent
updates or patches applied to the system. Updates can and do cause
things to stop working. The key is to know what else might need a patch
to get everything functioning again.

Movie Maker has never worked for me, I really don't understand what a system
restore would do other than to put it back in a non-working state with a
lower version of Firefox.

The only time Movie Maker HAS worked, was once after I upgraded Firefox. It
worked for an entire 6 minutes before it locked up, so I wouldn't even call
that "working".

Maybe if I do a system restore, then re-install Firefox every time I want to
use Movie Maker, it might work. But it seems like a lot of work to do a fix
that isn't even right....

Maybe if someone could explain what happened when I upgraded Firefox, it
might help me resolve the issue.

Have you considered that your computer may not have enough physical
resources to do what you want it to do?

What are the minimum requirements?

I have 2 gig of memory, 24 gig free on the C drive, and 45 gig free on the
external drive. I can't capture to either drive, even after defragging..
I'm using firewire which appears to be "working properly" if device manger
is correct. Have tried both firewire ports and replaced the cable anyway. I
can't capture to either drive and am running Movie Maker with no other
programs running and immediately after re-booting.

I believe the requirements for WinDV would be less than Movie Maker since it
is a more simple program. That doesn't work either.

Based on your description I don't think SR would help. You might try
creating a new profile/user and see if either works in that fresh profile.

Tried that, too, didn't work.

You might try DXDiag to verify the graphics card. Beyond that I'm
not really able to suggest any other solutions.
Click Start, Run (Type) Dxdiag [Enter]

Does the whole computer freeze and you have to reboot the machine by holding
the power button; or is it just the application that locks up and you can
exit the program with the computer still running? If the former, you may have
a hardware problem. Try testing the RAM with Memtest86.

Capturing standard video (640x480 or 720x480) consumes 13gig per hour.
Unless your hard drives are fast enough (I wouldn't count on the
external being able to keep up), it will fail.

I have 3 internal hard drives in this workstation and do a lot of video
capturing and editing. All of them are 7,200 rpm drives. You most
likely don't have the free space needed nor the speed to transfer the data.

Your CPU and video card also come into play and could be an issue also.
