I have had XP and dial-up for two years and all has been real fine.
Today, I was downloading the XP security downloads. I went away and
came back. There were a series of messages. One said it was not able to
download two of the downloads, there was a shortage of memory and it
had to readjust the memory settings and i might not be able to access
some applications because of it and i should reboot my computer for the
updates to take effect. Very strange about the memory. I keep my
computer very clean and don't use any great volumes.
I ok'd everything and restarted computer.
Started up fine, but i can no longer browse or get any messenger to
connect. The modem is connected and is busy trying but to no avail. All
pages are unavailable.
I did a restore to yesterday. No change. I then put it back to today. I
have deleted all temp files, ran scandisk, checked my modem settings.
Always the same. No browsing, no messenger connections. Modem connects
fine. I am now using my old Windows 95 (oh so painfully slow) and
searching all around.
The only thing that gave any hope is that i got a number rather than a
URL for one of Google's sites (64.233.187.99) and i got a Google search
page ok. And i could search on it and get results but i couldn't open
any of them unless they were cached by Google.
I could browse the Google page by number but not by typed letters.
I am totally lost and way over my head.
