Can't browse PC's on Network

I have a situation. For some reason I'm not able to browse for any of the
PC's or Macs on my net. I'm also unable to add network printers. I'm
running XP Pro. My W2K machine works fime. When I try to browse the
workgroup (IMAGEXPRESS) from my XP Machine, I get an error. ****IMAGEXPRESS
is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network
resource. Contact the Admin of this server to find out if you hace Access
permissions. The list of Servers for this Workgroup is not currently
available.**** But I'm logged in as an Admin. This problem seemed to have
started after installing PC MacLan, which I have unintalled. Any help would
be great.

Thanks,

Jason

Jason, I have the same problem and I haven't found a solution. Other people
have posted similar problems on this newsgroup, but I haven't found a
solution. This is the first time I have seen this. I am using dell computers
with Windows XP pro. I can get to the internet but I can't seem to get to
other computers, servers or printers. I can ping them ok but it gives me some
permisson error and network path not found. I know its not a permission
problem, beceause I have done other dell computers and had no problem. It has
only been these latestes ones with windows xp with sp2 on them. I get the
internet ok. I am searching all knowledge bases and hope Microsoft in their
brillance of fixing one problem and creating others post a soluition or a
fix.

Jason & 'Wishbone' -
I also have the same problem - I recently connected 2 new Dells with Windows
XP home to my current network (XPhome laptop and win98) and at first I had no
problem putting them on the same network. Suddenly after a week or so, both
Dells are emitting the same message: ****(workgroup) is not accessible. You
might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the Admin of
this server to find out if you hace Access permissions. The list of Servers
for this Workgroup is not currently available.**** I also am logged in as an
admin. The problem seemed to have started after installing Norton Antivirus,
which I have uninstalled. I've tried pinging from each and I can only access
the router.
Should I try to uninstall and reinstall my network config; network drives,
etc.?
Please respond is any solution is found.
Thanks-
Rog

Please provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer (as many
as 3 if possible), as a start. Read this article, and linked articles, and
follow instructions precisely:

Rog,

When you uninstalled NAV, did you un install it completely, using precise
instructions provided by Symantec? Was it part of a bundle, maybe Norton
Internet Security?

It was part of a bundle with Norton Internet Security - Actually I did find
the solution after reading some of the other threads you had responded too.
I guess I missed some of the firewalls put in place by NIS which I thought I
had reconfigured. When I reinstalled it I caught the ones I missed. Is
there any other way of fixing this so it doesn't happen in the future? maybe
with a Restore option? With my limited comp. skills, I get confused when I
come across all the different types of incoming/outgoing connections. [this
is in the Security Configuration>advanced settings>general rules section of
NIS] Examples: DNS, ICMP,UDP Rule, NetBios, etc.
Can you advise on which connections are needed to permit only the computers

Asking for specific instructions in configuring any personal firewall is a dodgy
business; personal firewalls vary so much from model to model, and from year to
year. You need to look at each rule, and decide what functions each one
provides.

Of the ones which you listed,
# DNS provides the ability to resolve names by TCP/IP.
# ICMP provides the ability to ping, and / or to be pinged.
# NetBIOS (is that truly a rule in NIS?) is most likely NetBIOS Over TCP/IP, and
provides file sharing ability.

I think this is where you need to spend some quality time with the NIS User
Guide.

<SNIP>

OK, Jason,
# Both computers are on the same subnet (192.168.1/24).
# Both computers are in the same workgroup, IMAGEXPRESS.
# Both computers have acceptable Node Type (Broadcast and Unknown are OK).
# Both computers apparently have network connectivity (OnyxRip sees 2 servers).

Check both computers for misconfigured / overlooked firewalls, and for registry
setting restrictanonymous.

Make sure that a properly setup, common account, is on both computers.

Jason,

Try again. I assure those web pages are there. Do you copy the ENTIRE portion
of the link into your web browser? Most newsreaders should honor the "<>" and
not break the URL. Make sure that you get the entire URL, between the "<" and
">", into the browser.

Chuck,

I'm sorry the links do work. My fault. I read the literature and none of
it helped me out. The funny thing is everything used to work fine for a
while. I noticed a change after I installed PCMaclan. I've uninstalled it
(not sure if I got all of it,) but I'm not sure if it's changed my system at
all. I'm not even sure if it's the route of my problem. This has happened
before. I fixed it the last time by formatting and re-installing the os
which I don't want to do again. I've considered purchasing another version
of W2K, becasue I never have a problem with my W2K machine. Any other
suggestions would be great.

Thanks again,

Jason
