Fred

Despite my three drives (CD Rom/Rewiter/DVD)working
normally, I cannot get my sytem to boot from the XP
installation disk (with a view to repair or reinstall)
despite adjusting BIOS to read from CD rom instead of IDE-
0. It only gives me the black screen offering satrt in
safe mode, last configuration that worked etc

It sounds like the bios is NOT set to CD first in the boot order, but
you say it is, then possibly it's a bad CD. You might check it on someone
else's computer just to make sure.
Did you try it in all three drives?

if you are seeing that message you aren't booting from the
cd. you may have a damaged cd or you aren't watching for
the "press any key to boot from cd" message.
