can't boot xp after service pack 1 download

My mom has an IBM PC; it's a few years old. She seemed
to have a virus, so I went to microsoft's website to
download a fix. I was instructed to first
download "service pack 1", which I did. Now her computer
won't boot up. All I can access is the BIOS set up or a
diagnostics program. I don't want to reformat if I don't
have to, because she has some files that she doesn't want
to lose.
I would very much appreciaate any/all advice.
Thank you.

Hi

You can try a 'Repair Install' although that will mean that all Updates will have to be re-installed, but should retain all the data files - would be a good idea to backup those data files first though:
