cant boot with knoppix iso cd

my laptops windows xp splash screen comes on too quick even though i changed
the boot order to cd rom first.
i had to reinstall windows but my old directories on original installation
are still there. i need access to my files. im getting access denied. how can
i get my laptop to give enough time to boot from the iso knoppix cd instead
of opening straight into windows?
thanks in advance.
downloading knoppix was hardly point and click btw. trying to tunnel through
cryptic mirror sites defeats the purpose of a GUI boot IMHO.

You need to "take ownership" of the folder in windows to allow you to view
your old files & folders. As to why knoppix wont boot perhaps you haven't
create the boot CD correctly. Last time I used it it worked fine.

As long as encryption isn't involved you can take ownership.
Explorer|"folder"|File|Properties|Security|Advanced|Owner and take
ownership, check the box for 'Replace owner on subcontainers and objects'

hi guys thanks for the suggestion of taking ownership but im using xp home.
isnt that a feature of xp pro? i do have my work laptop here and it runs xp
pro.
all i do with knoppix was download it as an iso image and burn it to dvd and
i finalized the dvd.

When you burn the ISO to CD did you "open" the ISO. If you just create a
data CD with the ISO on it then you are just making a backup o the ISO. What
program do you use to create a CD/DVD.??

Time is irrelevant. It doesn't need time. You don't press anything to
boot off of it. Perhaps you're getting confused with pressing F8 at the
right time in loading windows, to get a windows menu. Or perhaps you're
getting confused with a windows xp cd that says "press any key to boot
from cd". I'm quite sure that it already boots from CD when it says
that, and then ti exits it if you don't press a key, that is why it
only happens for the win xp cd.
If there is any BIOS that prompts you like that, it's rare. But if
there was, then you would be prompted. And not just for a split second.

Most obvious possibilities are that you either didn't set the boot
sequence correctly in the BIOS, or your knoppix cd isn't bootable.
I'm sure the ISO you downloaded was bootable. So I'd suggest you look
at and correctly amend the boot sequence in the BIOS.

Don't talk about tunneling through sites. Tunneling is something else
in computer language.

You seem to be misunderstanding what a cd iso file is. It is an image file
of a cd. You can't simply copy it to a DVD-R disk and expect it to work.
Nor can you copy that file to a CD-R. You need to use a program that is
capable of burning a CD-R *FROM* that iso file. Nero is a program that can
do that by burning an iso.

Cheers.

I used sonic to burn the iso of knoppix i downloaded to a dvd. i went in and
changed the boot sequence to cd drive first. when i rebooted the laptop, the
windows splash screen appears and it loads windows. it doesnt go to cd first.

if the iso image has to be "opened" as neil stated, why arent the steps
explained on the download site or within sonic? the steps for finalizing the
cd/dvd are there for example.

one tends not to need instructions on how to open a file in ms word, or
open a file in anything. It's unavoidable!

you either created a new file or you opened it

nero is a standard program.

Does Sonic have an option to create a data CD FROM an Iso image? Are you
sure you actually created a bootable CD rather than just a copy of the iso
image?

Good point. I'd say most people who download an iso for the first time
fail to burn it properly ie they just burn the iso to disk like any
other file, which of course, wont work.

hi gordon. i posted earlier today that i realized i burned a copy of the iso
only. i have to try in nero (or sonic) if one or the other will make it
bootable. and to anonymous brit, i can admit my error. when i want lessons on
losing an empire, ill be sure to read your lesson plan.
